Labradorite

Labradorite has an effect called labradoresence (it’s a little on the nose, but whatever). It’s the only stone in the world that reflects light the way it does. In fact, rainbow moonstone isn’t actually moonstone at all. While still part of the feldspar family, Moonstone doesn’t really have that much color flash, it’s has more of a lustrous cat’s eye effect (called Chatoyancy).  But what we think of as rainbow moonstone is actually just white Labradorite. See Labradorite is a vaguely transparent greyish or whitish color in and of itself, but along its cleavage (No, Not THAT cleavage… but the natural break line of the stone) the light penetrates and is reflected back in an array of beautiful colors. If you look at the pictures below, you can see where the large heart shaped stones are shifted first one way and then the other. This shows both the translucent stone with its break lines and then the color play as the light hits it from another angle. Feldspar stones in general are one of only a handful of stones that are always deliberately cut to include as many “inclusions” as possible.  And because it’s not a brittle stone, it can also be found carved.
